What type of building foundation is suitable for a low rise detached property on a compact gravel site?

Most small modern building foundations are of the concrete mat type, where a concrete slab which serves as the floor also serves as the building's foundation.

Whether you have gravel on the site or not is not a real indicator of what kind of foundation you should use, as the gravel is most likely not very deep and any foundation placed will be deeper than the gravel. No matter what, you should still check and make sure the ground is stable. What type of building foundation is suitable for a low rise detached property on a compact gravel site?
you should have plans done which would state the foundations or a surveyors report done these will tell you more about what is neededWhat type of building foundation is suitable for a low rise detached property on a compact gravel site?
No matter what you will have to dig down where the home will be and pour concrete with rebar for the foundation. I would do 12 inches of concrete. You can put the concrete blocks under the rebar before you pour if you are your own general contractor.
the easist is a concrete slab, pour a 12 x 12 footing around the exterior and then pour the concrete slab over the top of the footing. check with your local building dept first.

You should go and visit your local council building office dept for advice. Width on concrete foundations is just as important as thickness and mix design, usually 1-3-6. Steel reinforcement too, especially on gravel with little fines, maybe needed as some gravels have little load bearing qualities just like dry sand has.
